Original artwork: painting/traditional Japanese Yuzen paper/vintage images mix.
28.5×22cm Vintage wooden frame.
This project began in Japan in 2024, when I met a group of elderly craftspeople who make traditional washi by hand. I had always been fascinated by the beauty of Japanese paper, especially Yuzen, with its gold accents and elaborate patterns, and I was eager to hear their stories.
What I learned was heartbreaking. Once they use up their remaining stock, they will no longer be able to make handmade paper using the traditional method, because no young people are learning the craft. I was deeply saddened, and I regretted not knowing sooner.
That moment inspired me to create art that celebrates the beauty of Yuzen paper, in collaboration with these craftspeople. I want to show the world how important it is not only to preserve traditional arts, but also to pass them on to future generations.
In my work, I combine this paper with my own art and my love of vintage and antique frames. The old wooden frames, once treasured in someone else’s home, add history and depth to each new piece.
Never produce prints for this series.
